Bloomberg said on November 25 that for the first time in at least 31 years, the number of American companies with regional headquarters in Hong Kong was less than that of mainland Chinese companies.
According to data released by the Census and Statistics Department of the Hong Kong Government since 1991, as of June 1, 2022, there were 240 U.S. companies in Hong Kong with regional headquarters here, a decrease of 14 from the previous year and the lowest number since 2002.
The number of regional headquarters of mainland Chinese companies in Hong Kong decreased by 1 to 251.
Bloomberg reported that restrictions on the novel coronavirus pneumonia (COVID-19), actions related to national security, and economic troubles have weakened Hong Kong's attractiveness as an international financial center, and some companies have shifted resources to Hong Kong. Other centers including Singapore.
Statistics show that Chinese companies account for 18% of the headquarters in Hong Kong, and American companies account for 17%, followed by Japan, the United Kingdom and Germany.
At its peak in 2012, 333 US companies had regional headquarters in Hong Kong.
