The Russian military has begun removing nuclear warheads from aging cruise missiles and is firing them without a warhead towards Ukraine, Britain's military intelligence announced this morning (Saturday).
According to the British Ministry of Defence, photographic evidence shows the wreckage of a cruise missile fired at Ukraine, which appears to have been designed in the 1980s as a nuclear cruise missile - but was detonated from its original warhead.
Such a missile can still produce damage using the kinetic energy of the missile and fuel that remains in the missile body and explodes.
However, "it is unlikely that such a weapon will achieve the required effect against the targets" the British Ministry of Defense published in its daily intelligence update.
"Whatever Russia's intentions, this improvisation highlights the level of depletion in its long-range missile stockpile," the British Ministry of Defense concluded.
