A 24-year-old climate activist is on trial in Berlin.

Above all, the choice of his defender caused a stir: left-wing politician Gregor Gysi.

Berlin - Controversial street blockades, sticking actions and art attacks: climate activists of the "last generation" have recently caused a stir with their protests against climate change and environmental destruction.

Again and again the demonstrators have to answer in court.

A process with prominent participation began in Berlin on Wednesday (November 30).

Climate activist in Berlin in court: left-wing politician Gysi is his defender

A 24-year-old accused climate protection demonstrator and alleged road blocker was defended by the lawyer Gregor Gysi on Wednesday in front of the Tiergarten district court.

The well-known left-wing politician did not comment in front of the numerous waiting journalists before the start of the hearing, as the dpa reports.

Ahead of the trial, Gysi's law firm confirmed the defense of the "last generation" climate activist.

"An activist and other activists of the climate protection initiative were looking for Dr.

Gysi to a longer conversation in the Bundestag.

In doing so, they obtained his agreement to defend an accused person," the law firm said.

24-year-old climate activist in Berlin: Allegedly involved in road blockades

The 24-year-old man is said to have participated in three street blockades by the group "Last Generation" in January and March in Berlin, according to the public prosecutor.

In one of the cases he is said to have glued himself to the road.

He is also said to have taken part in a demonstration in an anteroom of the Federal Ministry of Justice in February.

The allegations are coercion, resistance to police officers and trespassing.

According to the court, five penal orders have already been issued against the man, against which he has appealed.

Climate protests of the "Last Generation": Numerous actions in recent times

After an assurance from the "last generation" this week that they would refrain from further action in Berlin and Munich, 19 climate activists who were being held in the Stadelheim prison were released on Saturday (November 26).

Another climate sticker that blocked traffic at Munich's Isartor delivered a bizarre show in court.

In order to protest against the climate policy, the "last generation" has recently carried out more actions.

In Vienna, activists poured oil on a work of art by Gustav Klimt.

In the Barberini Museum in Potsdam, a man and a woman threw mashed potatoes at Claude Monet's painting "Stacks of Grain" (1890), which was protected by a glass pane.

In Hamburg, climate activists glued themselves to the Elbphilharmonie – on the Internet, however, the climate glue received scorn and ridicule for their action.
