Pensions: Borne still hopes for "a path" with LR

2022-12-01T19:43:23.121Z

If the right is traditionally in favor of a reform pushing back the legal age of departure, the Prime Minister will need the support of LR deputies if there is no recourse to article 49-3.

Elisabeth Borne claims

to "be able to find a way"

with the Republicans (LR) on the controversial pension reform, the outlines of which she must announce in mid-December.

"I have not always had an enthusiastic welcome from certain

" presidents of parliamentary groups

"but I think that with others, the Republicans for example, we must be able to find a way"

, declares the Prime Minister in an interview with

Le Parisien

, posted online Thursday evening.

Elisabeth Borne will bring together several ministers on Friday afternoon about the pension reform, AFP learned from Matignon.

The Prime Minister, who does not have an absolute majority in the National Assembly, therefore needs the support of opposition deputies to hope to have her reform adopted without resorting to article 49-3.

Republicans are traditionally in favor of a pension reform pushing back the legal retirement age.

The government

"will listen to the proposals of each other"

, assures the head of government, questioned on the proposal, adopted each year by the Senate, with a majority on the right, to postpone the age of departure to 64 years in exchange for an extension of the contribution period.

Emmanuel Macron's initial proposal was to gradually postpone the retirement age to 65, but he has since said he is

"open"

to a postponement to 64 with an extension of the contribution period.

Right to protest

On the possible demonstrations of opponents of this reform, Elisabeth Borne admits that

“there is a right to demonstrate”

but reaffirms that

“this reform is necessary to save our pension system”

.

She assures that the reform will be “progressive” and that the first people concerned will be those

“born in 1961”

, they

“will work a few months longer before they can reach the legal age

”.

She specifies that the principle of

"long careers"

allowing to leave two or four years before the legal age will be

"relaxed for those who really started working very early"

.

For women, she says she does not want to increase the age of cancellation of the discount,

"which will remain at 67"

.

The last round of consultation with the social partners on the reform, focused on

"financing"

therefore the legal age of departure, started Thursday evening at the Ministry of Labor.

Expected at the turn, the executive remains in the background and no working document has yet been sent to the social partners, unlike the previous cycle on

“equity and social justice”

.
