New chapter in the anger about the steep increase in electricity prices at Stadtwerke München.

The supplier is now announcing that it will slightly reduce prices again from April.

Munich – Stadtwerke München (SWM) are rowing back – at least a little bit.

After the drastic increase at the turn of the year, prices should at least fall slightly again in the spring.

As of April 1, 2023, customers will pay 51.89 cents per kilowatt hour (kWh) of electricity - and not the 61.89 cents that will apply from January 1.

The basic price remains at 128.28 euros per year.

For the average Munich household (2500 kilowatt hours per year), this means costs of 1187.83 euros per year from April – instead of 1237.83 euros.

According to our information, almost 10,000 customers have run away from the Stadtwerke

As reported, the municipal utility announced just a few weeks ago that it would raise electricity prices by an average of 122 percent due to the energy crisis – some customers are even paying more.

Hundreds of letters from readers reached our editorial team, we reported extensively on SWM customers, some of whom no longer know how to pay their bills in the future.

Many drew conclusions and changed providers: According to our information, almost 10,000 customers have run away from the municipal works so far.

The slight price reduction in April apparently has nothing to do with this.

According to SWM, the official reason is that there was only recently an opportunity to lower the price.

"On November 25, 2022, the federal government announced that the planned skimming off of profits from SWM's wind farms to finance the nationwide electricity price brake will start in December instead of September and will not have retroactive effect," writes the company.

“So SWM has to pay less than announced from the income from their wind farms to the federal government to finance the nationwide electricity price brake.

SWM is using the leeway gained as a result to lower prices, even if electricity sales will then temporarily work at a loss.” April 1st is the earliest possible date for the reduction,

SWM customers will receive a letter about this from the beginning/mid-February.

The discounts will probably be adjusted with the implementation of the price brakes in February 2023, and the new prices as of April 1st will also be taken into account here.

The reduction was also the urgent wish of Mayor Dieter Reiter

The reduction was also the urgent wish of Mayor Dieter Reiter (SPD).

According to reports, there was more than one conversation.

"Of course, the city council was not happy about the price development either - and we signaled that to the company management," says Green Party boss Dominik Krause.

The reduction is now all the more gratifying.

From the point of view of the opposition, this is not a glorious sheet: "First the SWM messed up the energy transition, then they paniced the whole of Munich and now the role is following backwards," complains ÖDP boss Tobias Ruff.

The SWM had operated a catastrophic purchasing policy.

"Anyone who buys at top prices and neglects the energy transition must demand top prices from customers!"
