The Minister of Agriculture, Eng. Muhammad Hassan Qatana, discussed with the Sudanese Minister of Agriculture and Forestry, Dr. Abu Bakr Omar Al-Bishri, areas of cooperation and agreements signed between the two countries in the agricultural field.
Qatana pointed out the importance of reviewing the agreements and memorandums of understanding signed between the two sides since 2000, in the fields of research, forestry, protection, plant wealth in all its forms, and plant quarantine systems, which form the basis for increasing the exchange of agricultural products.
The minister touched on the issue of fodder and the possibility of importing it from Sudan, in addition to other agricultural products such as mangoes and livestock such as camels and others, in exchange for exporting Syrian agricultural products that enjoy international specifications and high quality such as apples, citrus fruits, olive oil, pomegranates and other products, in a way that guarantees the promotion of trade exchange and the achievement of agricultural integration. Both plant and animal, between the two countries.
The Sudanese Minister of Agriculture pointed out the importance of strengthening cooperation between the two countries and reviewing and developing the signed agreements, pointing to the role of the Arab Center for the Studies of Arid Zones and Dry Lands “ACSAD” in preparing for these meetings, and increasing Arab rapprochement, in a way that supports increased production and achieving food security.
The Director General of ACSAD, Dr. Nasr Al-Din Al-Obaid, affirmed the organization's readiness to provide what is necessary in order to develop agricultural relations between Syria and all Arab countries, referring to the endless support provided by Syria, the organization's headquarters.
The meeting was attended by the Sudanese Ambassador to Syria, Dr. Tariq Al-Tom, and from the Syrian side, the Assistant Minister, Dr. Fayez Al-Miqdad, the Director General of the General Authority for Scientific Agricultural Research, and the directors of plant protection, agricultural economics, planning and international cooperation.
