Marseille, Arles, Paris… The war against archaeological looting is declared

In a context of growing mobilization of public authorities, museums intend, through their exhibitions, to raise awareness of the scientific danger posed by illegal excavations and the online dispersal of looted objects.

Since December 16, the Marseille History Museum has been home to a disparate collection of ancient objects: a prehistoric menhir statue, a Gallo-Roman statuette of Apollo, crucifixes galore and rusty helmets from the industrial era, for cite only a handful of pieces.

This set has varied historical origins, but the same context of discovery: archaeological looting.

French institutions are increasingly alarmed by this delinquency and have multiplied, in recent months, actions to raise awareness of the protection of national heritage.

Because the lines are moving behind the scenes.

In July, the Ministry of Culture and the General Directorate of the Gendarmerie signed a framework agreement to strengthen their cooperation in the fight for the protection of heritage.
