Wolfgang Schmutz died at the age of 89.

He was at "Beim Baur", the once largest farm in Fränking, at home and managed it.

When Schmutz became seriously ill in 2011 and was in a coma for three months, no one could have guessed "that he would still have eleven more years to come," said his son Reinhard full of gratitude.

But now he was running out of strength.

Fränking

- A large crowd of mourners attended the funeral service in the family's Grafenstadl event hall in Fränking, before the deceased was laid to rest in the family grave at the cemetery in Eichstock.

It was his wish that the funeral service would be performed by his son Reinhard.

Reinhard was supported by his five siblings, who read prayers and played music.

They looked back on their father's life.

Great sadness for Wolfgang Schmutz - family, work and faith in focus

Dirt was a farmer who always had new innovations in mind on his farm.

In 1982 he gave up the conventional farming he had inherited from his parents and turned the farm into a chicken farm with 26,000 laying hens and 35,000 pullet rearing animals.

The farm has long since been abandoned - just like the blueberry plantation that was created in the meantime.

Along the way, dirt acquired the Proclama publishing house for Christian books, which was later expanded into an office trade.

In the meantime he went to Canada for a few years, where he bought a large farm with two of his brothers.

In addition to family and work, the focus of Dirt has always been on faith.

At the age of 18 he did an exchange year with a Mennonite organization in the USA and worked on farms.

Wolfgang Schmutz died: rounds of talks about faith - also a guest football star

For around 50 years, dirt shaped the Mennonite history in Eichstock.

For a long time he was the “elder”, i.e. co-leader of the Mennonite church in Eichstock.

He also attended the European Mennonite Bible School in Bienenberg in Switzerland and founded the Mennonite Home Mission in Germany, which works to found new Christian communities.

Dirt invited well-known personalities to various places in the district, who then reported on their faith in discussion groups.

For example, the former Brazilian soccer star Jorginho, who played for FC Bayern at the time, was a guest.

A number of years ago, however, dirt distanced himself from the Mennonite religious community, because at some point denominations no longer had any meaning for him.

Instead, almost until his death, he met interested people at his home to discuss texts from the Bible with them.

"He accompanied people in their everyday lives and gave them support when they had problems," recalls his son Reinhard.

He wrote an autobiography and discussed with FC Bayern players

Together with his granddaughter Emily, Schmutz and his granddaughter Emily wrote down the story of his life under the title “It was nice”.

Descendants will certainly read it more often and remember a special person.

His wife Gudrun, to whom he was happily married for 64 years and who lovingly cared for him to the end, as well as his six children, 17 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren mourn the loss of Wolfgang Schmutz.

At Wolfgang Schmutz's funeral, the cohesion of the extended family became particularly clear again, even if some of the family members live far apart.

At the end of the funeral service, a quote from the deceased could be heard: "I have had a wonderful life with ups and downs, some tensions, but above all with faith and love, for which I am very grateful."
