An Iowa woman considered the oldest person in the United States on record died Thursday at the age of 115.

Bessie Laurena Hendricks, a Lake City resident, died at Shady Oaks Care Center, Lampe & Powers Funeral Home said.

Hendricks

had celebrated his 115th birthday this past November 7

.

In 2022, the scientific group Gerontology Research Group, based in Los Angeles, considered her the oldest living person in the country.

Born in 1907 in Calhoun County, west central Iowa, Hendricks

lived through the sinking of the Titanic, World War I and World War II

, the Great Depression, and the Spanish flu and COVID-19 pandemics.

She was a teacher at a school and the mother of five children, according to the Des Moines Register newspaper.

She is survived by three of them.

A service will be held in his honor at Lampe & Powers Funeral Home on Saturday.

The Gerontology Research Group reported that after her death, a 114-year-old California woman named

Edie Ceccarelli will go on to hold the title of the oldest living person in the United States.
