"China's demographic and economic outlook is much bleaker than expected. China will have to adjust its social, economic, defense and foreign policies," demographer Yu Fuxian told Reuters news agency.

This is the first decrease since 1961, the last year of the "Great Famine" policy led by the Chinese leader and founder of the "People's Republic" Mao Zedong between 1958-1961 and which caused the death of 15 million people according to official figures, although estimates speak of 20-40 million citizens.

There are several reasons for the trend that caused the surprising figure, among them the effects of the birth control policy that was in effect between 1985-2015, as well as the increase in education prices in the country, which discouraged many parents from expanding the family unit to more than one child, if at all.

India is on its way to becoming the most populous country in the world.

Experts warn that in the long term China's population will decrease by about 109 million people by 2050, an estimate that is three times higher than the one made in 2019.

"The basic reason why women do not want to have children is not in themselves, but in the failure of society and men to take responsibility for raising children. For women who give birth, this leads to a serious decrease in their quality of life," said a user on one of China's social networks.

Meanwhile, in recent days, estimates have been published about another giant with a huge population: India, which is about to overtake China and become the most populous country in the world this year.
