The political system was in an uproar today (Wednesday) after the High Court's decision to disqualify the appointment of Shas chairman Aryeh Deri as minister. While the opposition welcomed the decision, the coalition attacked the judicial system against the background of the reform that Justice Minister Yariv Levin wants to pass.

Shas said In response to the ruling that "nothing has fallen in Israel" and that "the Supreme Court, which claims to care about minorities, today threw away the voice and vote of 400,000 voters."

The party also said that "today the court actually ruled that the elections are meaningless. The court's decision is political and tainted by extreme improbability."

"The Supreme Court has once again put itself above the law. Today more than ever everyone understands: legal reform is necessary for the continued existence of Israeli democracy," said Noam party chairman Deputy Minister MK Avi Maoz in response to the High Court decision.

Before the High Court's decision, members of the Shas party threatened that if Deri were to be disqualified, this could break up the coalition.

Welfare Minister Yaakov Margi claimed that if the disqualification is implemented "there will be no government", and the Deputy Minister of Interior and Health, Moshe Arbel, said that "it will be a coalition shock".

The statements came after Deri himself called on his party members to exert media pressure on the matter.

Despite the threats, the assessment in the coalition was that the messages coming out of Shas are threats that will not be realized in the end, and they are intended to influence the decision of the High Court of Justice.
