Winter is in full swing but the environmentalist mayor of Bordeaux, faithful to his desire to be "

the mayor of everyday life and the mayor of the next day

", inaugurated this Wednesday a new "

busy yard

", in the Achard nursery school, in Bacalan, in the presence of several elected officials.

"

This degraded and obsolete courtyard has taken on volume by gaining height

", rejoices Yves Jouanard, the director of the establishment, in front of the new "

treasure island

", covered with shrubs and wood chips.

Four trees and twenty shrubs have been planted in the yard and 72% of the soil has been dewatered.

New facilities, including a climbing wall, a balance course and a wicker hut have also been installed, at a total cost of around 270,000 euros.

Mathilde Coineau, of the Pollen Paysages agency, project manager, also specifies that the courtyard has "

test islands

": some shrubs are not protected by fences, "

so that children are made aware of the fragility of the living

”.

60 trees and 260 shrubs planted in 2022

But the Achard school is the tree that hides the forest.

By 2030, for a total budget of approximately 18 million euros, all schoolyards and nurseries in the city of Bordeaux should be green.

Bordeaux is the only big city to have such an ambitious programme

,” recalls Pierre Hurmic.

A long-term project which "

provides for quality fittings without necessarily redoing all the surfaces to new, for the sake of sobriety and economy

".

This renovation in all public schools began in 2021, with the Schweitzer elementary school and the Paul Lapie and Beck kindergartens.

In 2022, eight truant yards were created, for a total of 60 trees and 260 shrubs planted.

This year, the pace is accelerating;

with fifteen courses soon under construction: six crèches, four kindergartens and five elementary schools.

Structural works are scheduled for July and August 2023 for schools and August for nurseries.

The plantations, additional furniture and games will take place until January 2024

”, specifies the municipality.

The stakes are high, because concrete schoolyards regularly turn into heat islands.

This summer, temperatures have exceeded 40 degrees in the city.

But this is not the only stumbling block around these public establishments.

"

In schools, the rate of energy sieves is considerable

," said Thomas Cazenave, MP and opposition municipal councilor in Bordeaux, on Monday.

Because for him, the town hall is not going fast enough on this subject.
