A bus rammed into a day care center in Canada, killing two children.
Six other children were injured in the accident on Wednesday in the city of Laval in Quebec province and taken to the hospital, rescue workers said.
Accordingly, several children were trapped under the bus.
The 51-year-old bus driver was arrested on suspicion of "manslaughter and dangerous driving", the police assume that the act was intentional.
According to the authorities, one child died at the scene of the accident, another in an ambulance.
Six other children who were taken to the hospital are "out of danger," police spokeswoman Erika Landry said.
No adults were injured in the incident.
The local police chief, Pierre Brochet, said the police believed it was premeditated, but his motive was not yet known.
The bus driver was interrogated and had no criminal record.
The facility, in which between 80 and 85 children are cared for, is in a cul-de-sac.
Pictures showed the bus hitting an area of the building that wasn't on the street or in a parking lot.
They also show that part of the roof collapsed onto the front of the bus.
According to witnesses, the bus driver deliberately headed for the daycare center
"I helped subdue the driver who got off the bus," a father told Radio Canada.
The witness's wife, who was also present at the time of the incident, said the driver was "half undressed."
The two witnesses said they saw the driver "deliberately drive toward the daycare."
Canada's Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said after the incident that he was "devastated.
We all are«.
The Prime Minister of the province of Quebec, François Legault, spoke of a "horrific drama".
"I'm thinking of the children, the parents and the employees," he wrote on Twitter.
Laval is the third largest city in the eastern Canadian province of Québec and is located near the metropolis of Montréal.
