Club World Cup: Flamengo suffered but kept the consolation prize

2023-02-11T18:27:53.451Z

They beat Al Ahly 4-2 for third place. In a match with emotions, great goals and controversy, the Egyptians came to turn it around and dominate in the second half.

A while before the expected final between

Real Madrid

and the Arab team

Al Hilal

led by the Argentine Ramón Díaz,

Flamengo

was left with the consolation prize by winning the match for third place in the

Club World Cup

.

It was 4-2 against

Al Ahly

in Cairo at the Moulay Abdellah Stadium, in the city of Raba.

Gabigol's and Pedro's doubles prevented a greater blush from Flamengo, initially destined to bid for the title and doomed to a consolation game that was brought forward by

the talent of its players, superior to the Egyptian enthusiasm

that dominated the scoreboard for many minutes.

The Brazilian representative on whom South American football had placed its hopes to regain dominance in the Club World Cup, failed in the semifinal.

At times he seemed to be able to accentuate his bad role in Morocco, although he managed to straighten out the clash with Al Ahly to take, at least, third place.

It was enough for him to push in the final stretch, when he had the result against him, against a rival with ten men due to the expulsion of Khaled Abdulfattah in minute 69, still with an advantage on the scoreboard.

Both at that time and at other times, the performance of the VAR was key

.

Without stepping on the accelerator, Flamengo already took the lead before ten minutes thanks to a penalty for a foul inside the area by Ali Maaloul that Gabriel Barbosa turned into a goal.

But Al Ahly reacted, more motivated than its rival.

In search of a triumph of reputation, he managed to equalize in a corner served by Ali Maaloul that Ahmed Abdelkader headed in.

The game was encouraged in the second half, in which there was everything.

The Egyptian team was able to take the lead in minute 56, with a penalty committed on Mohamed Sherif.

Ali Maaloul launched it but it was saved by goalkeeper Aderbar Santos.

However, Al Ahly did not sink, and four later they achieved the second, in a great individual play by Ahmed Abdelkader who dodged several rivals and scored the second for the Cairo team.

A goal.

Flamengo had to wake up and found its reward through inertia, against one less opponent, and thanks to the penalty spot.

In minute 67, due to a foul by Abdulfatah on Ayrton Lucas on the edge of the area, the African player was sent off.

And then, Pedro took advantage of a bad start from the goalkeeper El Shenawy to score with an empty goal and establish the tie.

Only the Al Ahly sank.

A handball by Hamdi Fathi detected by the VAR put Flamengo ahead.

The Gabigol penalty did not miss.

And now with Marcel Koller's team sunk and inferior, Pedro, once again taking advantage of a gift from the last rival defensive line, rounded off the only Brazilian victory in Morocco.
