"Czech" wants to win everything in this Formula 1 season 1:44
(CNN Spanish) --
This year's Formula 1 (F1) races promise more high-speed incidents, both on and off the track, as we saw in the Netflix documentary "Drive to Survive", with anger for breaching Red Bull's 2021 budget limit until Fernando Alonso's surprise switch to Aston Martin.
The latest in a series of controversies during Mohammed Ben Sulayem's 13-month presidency of the sport's governing body, the FIA, involved a new rule introduced in December.
Last month, several drivers, including Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen, spoke out about their concerns about the rule that prohibited drivers from making "political, religious and personal statements."
However, the FIA appeared to backtrack a few weeks later, issuing a "guidance" note saying the rule applied only during pre-race and post-race events, and on track.
Earlier this week, F1 returned to the spotlight after a human rights group raised concerns about what it says is the sport's continued role in "sportwashing" by holding races in
Bahrain
and Saudi Arabia.
In a statement to CNN on Monday, the FIA said it "cannot interfere in the internal affairs of a sovereign state", while an F1 spokesperson told CNN the sport took its responsibilities "very seriously".
This season the Mexican Sergio "Checo" Pérez, the Spanish Carlos Sainz Jr. and Fernando Alonso and the American Logan Sargeant compete.
