The Taxation and Economic Prosecutor's Office filed an indictment today (Monday) against the mayor of Or Akiva and former minister Yaakov Adri, who is accused of a series of governmental corruption offenses that he committed between 2013-2020, as part of his position as mayor.

In addition, the prosecutor's office filed indictments against eight additional defendants, who are charged with bribery, offering bribes and money laundering.

At the same time as the indictment was filed, a request was made to confiscate the property of Yaakov Adri and the other defendants.

The indictment charges Adri with various crimes of accepting bribes, asking for bribes, money laundering in the amount of hundreds of thousands of shekels, as well as crimes of theft by a public servant, fraud and breach of trust, receiving something fraudulently under aggravating circumstances, obstruction of justice, tax offenses and a crime of violence.

According to what is stated in the indictment, between the years 2013-2020, Edri requested and received various real estate projects and other parties "with economic interests" in Or Akiva, funds in amounts estimated at hundreds of thousands of shekels. In exchange for bribes, Edri worked to "advance the affairs" of the bribe givers. In addition , Edri took advantage of his position as mayor and acted fraudulently to obtain purchase vouchers whose purpose was, so to speak, to help the needy of the city, while in fact he made personal use of them.

After the filing of the indictment, Legal Adviser to the Government Gali Beharev-Miara submitted to the Committee for Examining the Suspension of Heads of Authorities due to the filing of an indictment, a request to suspend Adri from his position.

"The offenses attributed to Mr. Adri are extremely serious offenses concerning the purity of morals, committed, apparently, in clear connection to his public role as the head of the authority. These are offenses that, if proven, will manifest governmental corruption that is notable in its severity on the part of Mr. Adri, which involves a clear violation of the purity of morals and the rule of law." It was written in a request submitted through attorney Gil Bilevsky and Amikam Eshel from the Tel Aviv District Attorney's Office.

Attorney Tal Shapira and Attorney Stav Shortzberg said on behalf of Edri: "Mr. Edri completely denies the suspicions attributed to him, all of which are based on the dubious and unreliable testimony of a witness whose name the state refuses to publish or any identifying information about."

"The indictment presents a distorted, biased and falsified picture of reality, to the point of raising a claim that collections donated for the benefit of children in needy families are allegedly raised in order to take bribes. These claims, as well as others, will be completely disproved in court, while the true picture regarding the acts of charity will be presented to the public for the first time The many and blessed things of Mr. Adri and his extensive contribution over the years to the city of Or Akiva," they added.
