"Please don't break anything!": Freising city councillors receive Asam leadership - and bad news

2023-05-10T16:15:29.863Z

Highlights: Freising Cultural Committee given a guided tour of the mammoth Asam construction site. Councillors were able to view the ceiling painting of the Asam brothers in all its subtleties. By April 2024, just in time for the big Korbinian anniversary including the state exhibition, everything should be ready and the opening should take place. The total cost of the renovation in 2021: 59 million euros, there are no more recent figures. It is now clear what a wonderful gem the people of Freising can expect, says the mayor.

The members of the Freising Cultural Committee have been given a guided tour of the mammoth Asam construction site. There is also bad news.

Freising – It is to become a "small space of encounter", as it was formulated in the Culture Committee meeting on Tuesday – a space for volunteering, advice and a meeting place and meeting room, for example for agenda groups. This room, which currently still runs under the name "Dasama", will be located in the "heart of the city", namely in the Asam building. On a tour of the construction site after the meeting, the city councillors were able to get an idea of the space. However, there was not only good news.

There is a lot of work going on on the mammoth construction site Asam Building, because time is pressing. By April 2024, just in time for the big Korbinian anniversary including the state exhibition, everything should be ready and the opening should take place. The tour was led on Tuesday by Robert Naujokat, head of the building department, who immediately swore the city councillors to caution and personal responsibility: "Please look where you are stepping, not that you are stepping into a nail!"

The construction price increases by almost 40 percent

What was very important to him and showed that work is in full swing everywhere, especially in the area of power lines: "If someone accidentally tears out a cable on the ground, please let us know right away. It's not that something doesn't work anymore, and the Culture Committee was to blame."

But Naujokat wanted to get rid of the rather unpleasant news right away. "Within the last two years, the construction price has increased again – by 39.1 percent," says the head of the building authority. "We're all desperate, it's really difficult." Status of the total cost of the renovation in 2021: 59 million euros, there are no more recent figures.

Naujokat's formulation was also vague on the deadline: "We want to be ready in 2024. But it's always been very tightly calculated." In fact, things are progressing rapidly, as the councillors were also able to see in the courtyard. Paving work will soon be carried out there, after which the exterior façade will be brought to a high gloss.

The city councillors never come so close to the painting again

Of course, the free-standing staircase, i.e. the baroque staircase per se, which leads to the future city museum and the Asam foyer and already provides a foretaste of a great visual experience, provided a wow effect. By the way, the staircase should only be completely finished at the end, so that it is not damaged by work in the house.

(By the way: Everything from the region is now also available in our regular Freising newsletter.)

A special feature: Because the scaffolding in the Asam Hall is to be removed soon, the cultural committee then took the very last chance to get very close to the now completely restored ceiling paintings with all their magic and stucco and to look at subtleties that visitors are unlikely to notice - such as the fragile tiny bird depictions. And here, too, Naujokat, a little nervous, urged caution: "Please don't touch anything and don't break anything!"

There is a lot of praise from the mayor

What became clear on the rest of the tour: A lot has happened since the last visit to the construction site a year ago, and especially in areas such as the museum area, it is now clear what a wonderful gem the people of Freising can expect. And, of course, the councillors were also able to visit the room they had set up at the previous meeting: around 35 square metres for volunteering and advice, but currently still dusty and uninhabitable.

At the end of the tour, Mayor Eva Bönig also praised the P2 project on the south side of the building with an open-air stage. Many citizens would ask her about it: "Everyone is thrilled!"
