The German judiciary announced Wednesday, May 10, the arrest of two alleged members of the Lebanese Hezbollah in the country, suspected of proselytizing and activism on behalf of the pro-Iranian organization. Identified as Hassan M., a Lebanese, and Abdul-Latif W., a German-Lebanese, they were arrested near Cuxhaven in the north of the country, the German federal prosecutor's office said in a statement. The two men joined the ranks of Hezbollah in 2004 for Abdul-Latif W. and 2016 for Hassan M. respectively.
They are suspected of having acted as representatives of Hezbollah in the Bremen region, of having campaigned and spoken on behalf of the movement as well as of having supported interventions by preachers and organizations in Germany close to Hezbollah. The two men are due to be brought before a magistrate later today, who is to rule on a request from the prosecutor's office for remand in custody.

Hezbollah, or simply its military wing, is considered a terrorist organization by many countries, including the United States, those of the European Union, the United Kingdom and a majority of Arab League member states. In Germany, its political wing, which regularly organized anti-Israel protests, was allowed for a long time, before being banned in 2020.
