Disappearances of minors: "The runaway is the main gateway to prostitution"

In 2022, 43,202 disappearances of minors were reported to the police and gendarmerie forces in France. The association Droit d'enfance on which depends the emergency number for families, the 116,000 Missing Children, publishes this Thursday an activity report that allows to apprehend more precisely the motives of the runaways and the phenomena such as the responsibility of social networks or prostitution.

LEFIGARO. - Do we know precisely why minors run away?

Sandrine PEPIT. - What we are sure of is that at the origin of a runaway, there is a trauma: harassment, neglect, abuse, family conflict. The family is not necessarily at the origin of the trauma but the impossibility of dialogue is the primary cause of departure. For example, a child bullied at school may withdraw and no longer want to interact with his parents. And because he is ashamed, he may think that the only solution is to leave.
