As the police and the public prosecutor's office in Frankfurt reported, there was a "player tumult" that degenerated into a brawl between two football players. A 16-year-old player from a French football team allegedly hit a 15-year-old boy from Berlin in the head and neck. He suffered life-threatening brain injuries. Later, police and prosecutors said the victim was brain dead. The 16-year-old perpetrator was arrested and is now in custody.

In the meantime, the first reactions from the football world to the incident followed. Among other things, the Frankfurt club, on whose grounds the tournament was held, expressed shock. "The club is deeply saddened and now needs time to come to terms with the incident," said chairman Uwe Henß of SV Viktoria Preußen 07 to RTL.

The Hessian Football Association (HFV) also showed its condolences. "We are shocked that a young person is fighting for his life through violence on a Hessian football field. Our thoughts are with the boy's relatives," said Vice-President Silke Sinning in a statement on Tuesday (30 May). The HFV plans to support the police in solving the case. "We condemn any form of violence and are working with Fairplay Hessen to curb incidents of violence in the context of football as much as possible," said HFV treasurer Jörn Metzler. (kas)
