Courtney Santiago dies and comes back to life: 'It felt like a lifetime' (Tiktok/c_aileen26)
"Our existence and consciousness move on once we die – there's nothing to fear," shares Courtney Santiago, 32, who allegedly died for 40 seconds, visited the "afterlife" and came back to life to share what awaits us there.
Since Courtney Santiago has a family history of breast cancer, she went for an MRI as a precaution. During an examination in July last year, she lost consciousness and said she got a glimpse into the afterlife. When paramedics intravenously infused her, Santiago's body went into shock, her blood pressure dropped and her heart rate slowed drastically, leading to her losing consciousness.
In a collection of three TikTok videos, Santiago shared what she experienced after losing consciousness: "There was no idea of time at all. Just a feeling of total peace. I didn't worry about leaving my body, my life, my son or my family and friends behind — none of that felt more important," she said.

After entering what she described as this "dream state," she found herself standing on the beach facing a man she had never met — but felt she had known all her life. The character told her that everything was fine but that it was not yet time for her to go. Then her environment suddenly began to change. She found herself in the mountains, then in the back garden of her childhood home and in several other places where she felt connected to nature.
As soon as she woke up, Santiago claimed that she was unable to speak and her body felt completely stiff. Doctors later discovered that she had vaso-vagal reflex syncope, a condition of brief loss of consciousness due to a neurological drop in blood pressure or a drop in heart rate usually caused by seeing blood, pain, emotional tension or prolonged standing. Blood pressure and pulse drops cause unconsciousness when the brain is starved of oxygen. However, usually this condition is not life-threatening.

"I'm 100 percent sure that what I saw was 'what's between worlds' and was much more than just losing consciousness," Santiago said, "When we die, we don't disappear and wherever we go, we're happy there. You're not supposed to see something when you're unconscious—you're not dreaming or waking up from a coma with lost time. I told the nurse what I had seen and she told me that while it was rare, it was indeed possible to die during a bout of vaso-vagal syncope."

Santiago added: "I feel relieved to know what happened to me and although it's shocking to know that the stress almost killed me, it allowed me to seek treatment to treat these symptoms. My mother died in an almost identical scenario during a dentist appointment 4 years ago and no real explanation was ever found. However, it gave me peace of mind knowing that we may have experienced the same thing, but it was her time to go and not mine."
"The whole experience allowed me to be more open, to improve my relationships with the people I love. I'm not afraid to experience it again and I think managing my stress will reduce the likelihood of it," she said, adding, "I'm grateful that it happened and I feel like it's a confirmation that our existence and consciousness are moving on."

Her videos have garnered hundreds of thousands of views on TikTok and many have taken to the comments to share their personal experience related to the death. "Before my father died, he reported several visions of me at different ages... And he didn't use drugs," one viewer said, while another added: "I'm a cardiac arrest survivor. Four days in a coma. Honey, I believe you. I already know what's going on there."
Another user wrote: "I had a very similar experience last year. I felt like I was in another dimension." Another thanked her: "I lost a loved one recently. Your story gave me peace. May God bless you."
