It is 25.95 m long and 7.5 m wide, can accommodate eight sailors on board, and above all, will be able to switch to 100% electric. "Le Finistère" is the new buoy vessel of the Phares et Balises armament, a State service responsible for maintaining the navigation aids set up along the France and overseas coasts to warn of dangers (pitfalls, shoals), mark maritime routes and access channels to ports.

It was christened a week ago by the Secretary of State for the Sea, Hervé Berville, who came to Brest on the occasion of the European Maritime Days. It is also quai Malbert, in the heart of the main port of the city of Ponant, that this ship, new pillar of safety at sea, which had not known such renewal since 1968, will be posted year-round.

The "Finistère" was built at the Gléhen shipyard in Douarnenez and launched at the beginning of the year. Two more months allowed him to test his navigation. It can therefore switch to 100% electric operation during maneuvers in ports or in protected areas of the coast - very numerous in Finistère - knowing that its area of action is the Iroise Sea, the first French marine park.

Its 117 kWh batteries allow it to go up to 5 knots in half an hour and its hull shapes have been optimized to limit its diesel consumption and CO2 emissions as much as possible. To accomplish its buoy lifting missions, it will be equipped by Finistère partners: a crane from Hydro-Armor (Plouezoc'h) and a lifting winch from BOPP (Lanvéoc).

Six other lighthouse and beacon vessels will be gradually built over the next few years. The very first of this brand new, more ecological fleet, the "Finistère" will serve as a test and example, in particular "to implement new operational standards," said Hervé Berville during his visit to Brest.
