A former Blizzard employee claims he was fired after writing "satirical dialogue that makes fun of giant corporations" for a World of Warcraft character. Eric Covington worked for the company for nine years and claimed the layoffs were not long in coming after a senior Blizzard executive found the jokes about "corporate greed."
"I've written a number of generic jokes pointing to corporate greed for a loot-goblin character at Venture," Covington explained. "But then the management attacked the joke after we released the game update and we could no longer change the text. I'm no longer in Blizzard because of the incident." The jokes he wrote were available at the game for about a week until management noticed them.
So what lines of text shaped Blizzard so much? Here is the selection: "Time to return to the office", "Another record for revenue in the quarter", "Another yacht for the collection", "Do not share profits", "Let's call it the cost of living adjustment". And, of course, "See you later, sucker." Covington claims he was not given the opportunity to explain himself or the jokes, and that the joke was not directed at any specific corporation. Certainly not on Blizzard.
What makes the incident even funnier/sadder/absurd (decide for yourself) is that Blizzard's social media accounts posted videos containing some lines of jokes he wrote to promote the game, and they were removed after he pointed out that they were promoting the exact same content for which he was fired.
