After reaching an agreement and their demands being met, the strike by senior teaching staff at the universities came to an end Monday morning. The strike ends about two weeks after it began, and starting today, classes will resume as usual.
The strike, which began on May 20 (2023), was announced by the Coordinating Council of Senior Academic Staff Organizations at universities and included the Hebrew University, Tel Aviv, Ben-Gurion, Haifa, the Technion, Bar Ilan and the Weizmann Institute.
Wages eroded
According to them, the organizational step decided to take by the council members came after the Committee of University Heads (VERA), together with the Ministry of Finance and the PBC, had not provided a substantive response to their demand to amend wages due to the erosion that has occurred since the end of the previous agreement.
As stated, in the early hours of the morning, representatives of the Committee of University Heads (VERA), the PBC (the Planning and Budget Committee), the Ministry of Finance and the organizations of senior staff at the universities reached an agreement and ended the strike.
These agreements include graduated salary increases for faculty members, promotion of excellence in research and teaching, stability in the system until the end of 2027, and focused responses to other issues.
Some institutions announced that classes would be held on Zoom today. For example, Ben-Gurion University announced: "The strike by senior faculty members is over. At Ben-Gurion University, classes will take place today as usual on Zoom and will be recorded. From tomorrow (Tuesday), classes will take place on campuses. An announcement regarding the completion of classes during the strike will be issued later."
