Impeccable quality: bathing lakes in the Tölzer Land are not objectionable

2023-06-05T07:11:05.883Z

Highlights: Bad Tölz-Wolfratshausen has five EU bathing waters of supra-regional importance. The quality of the bathing lakes in the district is "impeccable," says a spokeswoman for the district office. Only at four ponds is there a bathing ban, as in previous years. The warmest lake is the Bibisee with 18.7 degrees, the coldest is the Walchensee at 12.3 degrees and the Kirchsee at 17.5 degrees.

After a rainy spring, many people are now drawn to the water in the warm temperatures. Most of the bathing lakes in the district have good water quality.

Bad Tölz-Wolfratshausen – Summer is slowly picking up speed. And what could be better than a jump into the cool water? The district offers numerous opportunities for this. And so that water rats can refresh themselves without worrying, the bathing waters here are regularly checked. The good news is that most of them have nothing to complain about.

"The quality of the bathing lakes in the district is impeccable"

"The quality of the bathing lakes in the district is impeccable," says Sabine Schmid, spokeswoman for the district office. Among them are five EU bathing waters. This is how "bathing waters of supra-regional importance" are declared, explains Schmid. These include Lake Starnberg, Lake Bibi near Königsdorf, Lake Walchensee, Lake Sylvenstein and Lake Kirchsee near Sachsenkam. All of them are bacteriologically unobjectionable.

"In general, the EU bathing waters in the district are sampled once a month from 15 May to 15 September according to a fixed scheme," explains Schmid. At the beginning of May, a so-called pre-season rehearsal will take place. This involves testing for germs that occur in human and animal excretions and can thus provide an indication of fecal contamination. "As part of the site inspection, the overall impression of the water body and any contamination by driftwood or surfactants, i.e. foaming, or oil ingress are also determined," says Sabine Schmid. "After longer periods of heat, increased attention is also paid to the occurrence of potentially harmful blue-green algae."

The Walchensee is currently the coldest lake

According to Schmid, the EU bathing sites were sampled for the second time this season on 22 May. "Other more frequently used bathing spots are sampled before the start of the season and beyond, especially during longer periods of good weather," she explains. Overall, according to the homepage of the district office (www.lra-toelz.de), almost all lakes are "bacteriologically unobjectionable".

Only at four ponds in the district is there a bathing ban, as in previous years. This applies to the ponds in Degerndorf and at the Hochland youth settlement in Königsdorf as well as the Lenggries excavator ponds at the Tratenbach and at the Breton Bridge. At the excavator pond near Obergries, sampling was not possible due to a construction site.

"Bathing bans are imposed when water bodies show excessive fluctuations in water quality and the microbiological limit values are exceeded," explains Schmid. In such cases, a comprehensive search for the cause is carried out with the participation of the water management office and series of investigations. However, if the cause cannot be remedied, for example in the case of impairment by road sewage or regular entry via tributaries during heavy rainfall, bathing bans would be imposed permanently in individual cases to protect the general public.

Kirchsee is currently just under 18 degrees

The water temperatures are also published on the district office homepage. "Due to the prolonged period of bad weather in recent weeks, the waters are currently still very refreshing," says Schmid. At the EU bathing places on Lake Starnberg, the water is 13.7 degrees, at Walchensee 12.3 degrees, at Sylvensteinsee 12.4 degrees and at Kirchsee 17.5 degrees. The warmest is currently the Bibisee with 18.7 degrees. "In the course of the next ten to 14 days, the other bathing waters in the district will also be sampled again and the results will be posted as soon as we have them," explains Schmid.

Despite the still quite fresh temperatures, a few brave people dared to jump into the cool water. "I've already seen some intrepid people in the water," says Lisa Grünwald from the Walchensee water rescue service. In general, many people would bathe all year round anyway, and refers to the trend towards ice bathing in winter. "I'm looking forward to the weekend," says Grünwald. "The place is full, a lot of guests are there."

Korbinian Landthaler from the Lenggrieser Wasserwacht has also seen a "few isolated" bathers at Lake Sylvenstein. "These are the die-hards," he says. And there's already something going on at the Kirchsee. "It's relatively quiet during the week," says Michael Oberhuber, who runs the Maikiki Café with his wife Birgit. "But there was a lot going on on the first holiday weekend. Everyone who didn't go on holiday seems to have been here with us," he says and laughs.
