Patrick Day had twice gone down in the fight against Charles Conwell. In the tenth round, he hit his head hard and lost consciousness.

After the second knockout of his career, US professional boxer Patrick Day is in a coma. The 27-year-old suffered several heavy head-hits in his fight against his compatriot Charles Conwell on Saturday night in Chicago and collapsed unconscious in the tenth round. He was transported out of the ring with a stretcher and taken to the hospital by ambulance.

"Dazn" reported that Day suffered a stroke on the way to the clinic and needed artificial respiration. According to reports of the streaming service as well as the US sports channel "ESPN" an emergency operation has been carried out on Days brain. It is unclear whether Day fell into a coma or was put into an artificial coma by the doctors.

"Please pray for Pat! Come home healthy," tweeted Charles Conwell. The Olympian of Rio 2016 had dominated the fight and crushed his opponent already in the fourth and eighth round. In the tenth round, referee Celestino Ruiz ended the fight after Day had hit the ground hard after two heavy blows from Conwell.

Day is an experienced boxer, with a total of 22 professional fights he stands 17 victories, a draw and four defeats. Conwell, however, is six years younger and undefeated in his previous ten professional bouts. Both boxers fight in the super welterweight class.

In July, there had been two similar cases: super-lightweights Maxim Dadaschew from Russia had been put into an artificial coma after several head hits and succumbed to his injuries four days later. Two days later, Argentine Hugo Santillan died of heart failure after falling into a coma after a fight. Previously, he had been provided by the German boxing federation with a protective barrier.
