NFL playoffs between Bills and Colts: if you freeze, you lose

Colts quarterback Philip Rivers spent much of his career in the California sun. At low temperatures, things go badly for the now 39-year-old, including in the playoffs at the Bills.

The Buffalo Bills have won a playoff game in the NFL for the first time in 25 years.

Quarterback Josh Allen and his team won 27:24 (14:10) against the Indianapolis Colts.

Colts quarterback Philip Rivers continued an inglorious series.

As the "New York Times" reported before the game at the Buffalo Bills, Rivers has lost every game since 2013 that was held at less than 1.7 degrees Celsius.

As ESPN analyst Kyle Soppe wrote, Rivers lost five of its last six games, which were played under 4.5 degrees.

So the Colts statistical problem began with the temperature in Bill's stage.

At the start of the playoffs (all games in the live ticker at SPIEGEL.de) on Saturday evening, it was around one degree.

Rivers had spent much of his career in the sun.

For 15 years he played with the Chargers, which were based first in San Diego, then in Los Angeles.

Rivers came to Indianapolis just before the season;

and now he had to deliver in the winter of New York state.

Certainly not the best conditions for the "creaking 39-year-old," as the New York Times wrote.

Defeat was not due to Rivers

Against the Bills, however, it was certainly not the trembling hands of Rivers that were responsible for the defeat.

Rather, he showed a strong performance with 309 yards and two touchdowns.

The fact that there were no more was due to his passport recipients, who repeatedly pulled past passports that were believed to be safe or dropped them.

In the game, the lead often changed at the beginning before the Bills moved away to 24:10.

But the Colts also worked their way up to three points through a fumble by Allen, who was only 24 years old and was not born when the Bills last won the playoff.

In the end, the Colts did not manage to equalize the field goal.

With the last throw, Rivers failed with a so-called Hail Mary, i.e. a pass over half the square.

The pass defense of the Bills blocked the somewhat too short throw before the end zone.

It is unclear whether this would have happened to him in the California sun.
