Three weeks after triumphing at the European Championships at home, England international Ellen White announced her retirement.
"Thanks football," wrote the 33-year-old on social media on Monday.
"This decision has always been one I wanted to make on my terms and now is my time to say goodbye to football and see the next generation shine."
England's record goalscorer and the Lionesses won the European Championship final at Wembley Stadium on July 31 against Germany 2-1 after extra time.
The Manchester City striker has scored 52 goals for England in 113 caps.
"Ellen is undoubtedly an icon of football and although her career is now over her efforts have paved the way for so many to succeed in the future," said City head coach Gareth Taylor.
