A shocking case stirs up Italy this past weekend.
Giovanni Padovani, a footballer who played most of his career in Serie C and D and also in the youth division of Napoli, is suspected of murdering his ex-partner Alessandra Matteozzi with a baseball bat.
According to the police, Padovani ambushed Metozzi in the lobby of her apartment building in Bologna and attacked her when she appeared.
In addition, Mattauzzi's sister was on the phone with her at the time of the attack and heard everything.
"She got out of her car and then started screaming," sister Stefania testified in an interview for a television program.
"She shouted, 'No Giovanni, I'm begging you. Save me'. I heard everything on the phone. I immediately called the police, who arrived very quickly."
The deceased's sister, who lives 30 kilometers away from the place where the shocking attack took place, added: "In the end he beat her to death."
In Italy they are angry with the authorities.

According to reports in Italy, 56-year-old Matteozzi and 26-year-old Padovani were married for about a year but then separated.
During their relationship he lived in Sicily most of the time, where he played while she lived in Bologna.
Last January, after the two had already separated, there was a break-in at Mattauzzi's house when many pieces of furniture and objects were smashed and destroyed.
It was also written in the Italian media that after the breakup, Padovani "bombarded" Matteozzi with countless messages and calls at all hours of the day, which made her complain against him for harassment.
In other cases, the suspect sabotaged Mattauzzi's car.
One of the neighbors said: "She was very afraid of him, he was very consistent and she didn't want to let him into her house."
In Italy, the authorities are furious that they allowed Padovani to continue his campaign of harassment and assault and did not stop him before, when the previous complaints were made by Matteozzi.
Padovani was arrested by the police and is currently in custody.
