Volodymyr Zelensky, the Ukrainian president, would have authorized his country to join Spain and Portugal, which have already joined forces.

Could some 2030 World Cup matches be played in Ukraine?

It is in any case the project of Volodymyr Zelensky.

The Ukrainian president would, according to the British media Times, aim to host several group matches in eight years, in a joint organization with Portugal and Spain.

The decision should be made public this Wednesday at a conference at UEFA.

In absolute terms, and of course if the situation in the country changes by then, Ukraine would host the meetings of a single pool, while the rest of the competition would be held in the Iberian Peninsula.

It remains to be seen what the weight of the proposal of the three European countries will be, in addition to the arrival of a nation currently at war and which will therefore have to rebuild itself if the Russian invader withdraws.

The initiative, which is very symbolic, could weigh in the balance at the time of the votes for the attribution, in addition to the fact that the next two take place outside the Old Continent, with Qatar in less than two months, and a 2026 edition with a triple candidacy between the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

At the moment, the most cited candidate is an Argentina-Uruguay-Paraguay-Chile ticket, to commemorate 100 years of the first World Cup.

Other countries (apart from Spain and Portugal) have come together to apply: Bulgaria, Serbia and Romania, as well as Greece, Saudi Arabia and Egypt.
