The President of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), Thomas Bach, issued a greeting for the New Year, where he announced that the sanctions imposed on Russia and Belarus following the invasion of Ukraine will continue in 2023.
As a reminder, the IOC decided not to allow the two countries to host international sports events, not to display the national symbols of these countries at any event, and to allow the sports organizations to prevent the participation of Russian and Belarusian athletes.
"These sanctions against the countries and governments of Russia and Belarus must and will remain in effect," Bach said, "We support athletes and members of the Ukrainian Olympic community everywhere with all our solidarity.
"In the new year, Ukrainian athletes can count on this full commitment from the IOC and the entire Olympic movement. We want to see a strong team from Ukraine at the Olympic Games in Paris 2024 and the Olympic Winter Games in Milan-Cortina 2026."

Earlier this month, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelinsky insisted that Russian athletes had to face "total isolation" and would not be welcome at the 2024 Olympics.
Zelinsky told Bach that he strongly opposes moves by the US Olympic and Paralympic Committee to allow athletes from Russia and Belarus to compete in the Paris Games on the condition that they do not participate under the colors or flags of their countries.
Zelensky also told Bach that he was disappointed by the Russian Olympic Committee president's presence at the IOC summit on November 9.
