An altercation pitted Ajax Amsterdam attacking midfielder Steven Berghuis against a FC Twente supporter, who beat Ajax at home on the final day of the Dutch championship on Sunday (3-1). Berghuis, a 31-year-old Dutch international, was filmed hitting an individual after the game, as he was about to board the Ajax bus.
The daily Algemeen Dagblad reveals that, according to a witness, Berghuis reacted this way after a racist insult ("Cancer blackie") against his teammate, Brian Brobbey. "I regret my gesture, I should not have done this," admitted a few hours later Berghuis, who was fined by his club Ajax.

"After every away game, we get a lot of name-calling in front of the bus as we take the time to hand out autographs to fans who ask for them," Berghuis continued. I'm used to it now, but people think they can shout anything." The Amsterdammer concedes, however, that his "answer solves nothing".
Neither Berghuis nor Brobbey confirmed the existence of racist slurs, but the 21-year-old Ajax striker posted a photo of himself and his teammate on Instagram, embellished with a heart. Ajax finished the season in 3rd place in the table and will play play-offs for qualification to the Europa League. Feyenoord Rotterdam were crowned champions ahead of PSV Eindhoven.
