British actor Ian Holm who starred in Chariots of Fire by Hugh Hudson, Alien by Ridley Scott or who played Bilbo Baggins in the saga of Petr Jackson The Lord of the Rings died at the age of 88.

Born September 12, 1931 in Goodmayes, Essex, he joined the Royal Shakespeare Company in 1960. His role in the play by Harold Pinter at the Aldwych Theater in London earned him the Tony Award for best actor in a play in 1967.

His performances at the Royal Shakespeare company earned him the attention of the cinema. In 1966, the BBC offered him the role of Richard III in The War of the Roses

His screen career is launched. After playing Obéron and a few other Shakespearean roles, Ridley Scott offered him the ambiguous role of the Android in his horrifying science fiction film Alien , released in 1979, alongside Sigourney Weaver, Tom Skerritt and John Hurt. He is crying out for truth, and scary as hell.

He continued with Les Chariots de feu in 1980. Holm was nominated for an Academy Award and won the Bafta for best supporting actor for his role as coach Sam Mussabini.

He also appeared in Greystoke in 1984 alongside Christophe Lambert, teaching the future Tarzan how to behave well in society.

But the general public will especially remember his interpretation of Biblo Baggins in the Peter Jackson trilogy The Lord of the Rings adapted from the romantic saga of JRR Tolkien released in 2001, with Elijah Wood in the role of Frodo.
