The upper limit for new coronavirus infections proposed by Chancellor Merkel is controversial - Bavaria is now going its own way.

  • The German anti- coronavirus plan provides for a certain upper limit for new infections . If this is exceeded, there may be more stringent measures.
  • However, some federal states are going their own way - now Bavaria too .
  • The Free State has two hotspots that break the limit.
  • The most important Sars-CoV-2 facts *, the nationwide Corona News * as well as the case number card * , and the Corona protection recommendations * .

Munich - The federal state of Bavaria * has decided to significantly tighten the upper limit for new coronavirus infections * - to 35 cases per 100,000 inhabitants within seven days in a city or district instead of the previous  50 . State Chancellor Florian Herrmann (CSU) announced  in Munich.

"The virus has not been defeated, so there will always be local outbreaks," said Herrmann. This "early warning system" for  hotspots is very important in the current phase of the pandemic . Shortly afterwards, Herrmann explained on Twitter: "From Pentecost, holidays * in Bavaria are possible again - always with clear hygiene regulations", as well as "Bavaria's corona strategy works, we remain vigilant!"

Corona virus limit reduced - are new contact restrictions threatening?

The new ceiling is then the number of cases * according to the infections are gradually reduced again, such as the detection of contact persons *,  the quarantine of certain facilities or the closure * of certain transactions or - at worst - again stricter Contact restrictions * .

At the press conference after the cabinet meeting, the number of new infections in Bavaria was stable - but there are hotspots in the Free State: the district of Coburg (82.2 cases per 100,000 inhabitants) and the city of Straubing (54.4 cases). But the causes are very clear, for example in Coburg there were series tests in old people's homes. If the infection chains are understandable, one can take local measures, such as a ban on visiting the old people's home.

The district of Straubing then announced that the relaxation of the corona requirements * would not be withdrawn and referred to a message from the Ministry of Health. It literally says: "Further measures on a broad population level in the district and city district do not seem to be necessary in the current situation." And further: If the number of infections increases in the next few days and weeks, "the measures must be adjusted accordingly".

Markus Söder (CSU) on Corona Virus Emergency Brake: “Central Element”

For Bavaria's Prime Minister Markus Söder (CSU)  the coronavirus new infection upper limit, also called "emergency brake", was the most important point in the exit plan from the shutdown . It was an emergency policy that showed everyone when to start again, the CSU chief had declared after the Bund-Länder switch with Chancellor Angela Merkel * (CDU) on May 6.

Söder continued: This is the "central element" of all planning. This is the only way to prevent regional pandemic plans "with more staff, more tests, with more containment on site" in good time that public life across the country has to be shut down again.

Corona virus cap: Angela Merkel warns French President Macron

In the meantime, Merkel has called for the rules on combating the corona pandemic to be harmonized within the European Union in order to enable free travel again. On Monday after a conversation with French President Emmanuel Macron , she suggested that the German upper limit for new infections should be used as a guide.

"It has to be the same in other countries, too, so you can rely on each other," said Merkel. "We have to have the courage - that will be the important thing now - not just come on hell (.) To treat all regions equally".

Merkel and Macron are planning a Franco-German initiative * for Europe's economic recovery and had a video chat about the project on Monday .
