Alaphilippe and Pinot in pain

A situation which could very well have been similar for the Groupama-FDJ formation, whereas 7 of Marc Madiot's 8 riders found themselves on land yesterday, and in particular Thibaut Pinot three kilometers from the finish. If the state and the mine of the Franc-Comtois on arrival yesterday foreshadowed physical suffering, his team wanted to reassure the followers confirming the departure of the entire armada for this second stage. A day of suffering also for Julian Alaphilippe who nevertheless remained serene. A painful return to the roads of the Tour for the two men told by Jean-Julien Ezvan.

Three dropouts already

The peloton found itself amputated by three riders this Sunday. 173 riders will take the start in Nice today after the retirement of the Spaniard Rafael Valls (BahraĂŻn-McLaren) due to a fractured femur and the Belgian Philippe Gilbert (Lotto-Soudal), also seriously affected. The Belgian team which also deplores the loss of another rider after the abandonment of the German John Degenkolb, who arrived late yesterday in Nice after having notably worked well to bring back its leader Caleb Ewan in the peloton for the sprint.

Another blow for Lotto-Soudal with the abandonment of Philippe Gilbert. Falling yesterday, the former world champion suffers from a fractured left kneecap and will not take the start today. It is the second retirement for this team after that of Degenkolb. # TDF2020

Aftermath of chaos

This 2020 edition of the Tour, already special in its context, will have given birth to an eventful first stage. On a very dangerous road, falls accumulated as the rain intensified, culminating in a fall three kilometers from the finish. The scarred faces left the impression that the bodies were already strained, at the end of the first episode in a long series of 21 battles. Our special correspondent Jean-Julien Ezvan gives lessons from this first stage won in the sprint by the Norwegian Alexander Kristoff (UAE Team Emirates).
