Forty-seven percent of former East German citizens regard themselves as “second-class citizens” and 38 percent feel that East-West unification has succeeded. The German government announced the results of this survey. It has been 30 years since the “Berlin Wall” collapsed in November 1989. The “heart wall” of citizens from east and west remains.

The survey was included in the annual report published from 1997 on the status of German unification. The answer that “unification was successful” was only 20% under 40 years old.
