Luxembourg's Foreign Minister Jean Asselborn on Tuesday called on the European Union to recognize a Palestinian state against US backing for Israeli settlements in the occupied Palestinian territories.

"Recognition of Palestine as a state is neither known nor an open mandate, but rather a recognition of the right of the Palestinian people to their state," Asselborn told Reuters.

The US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo renewed in a press conference yesterday the United States blatant bias to the entity of the Israeli occupation, where he announced that the US administration does not consider the Israeli settlements contrary to international law, ignoring all international resolutions, especially Security Council resolution 2334 of 2016, which calls for an immediate end to the occupation For all settlement operations in the Occupied Palestinian Territories.

Following the declaration, the EU said it "still believes that Israeli settlement in the Occupied Palestinian Territories is illegal under international law."
