Protest icons 2019: faces of resistance

Alaa Salah The 22-year-old student has become a symbol of resistance in Sudan. The first protests broke out in the African country in December 2018. This became a mass movement that lasted for months. The demonstrators gathered in front of the Presidential Palace and Army Headquarters in the capital, Khartoum. Women played a major role in the protests. It is estimated that more than two thirds of the demonstrators were women. One of them was Salah. The architecture student became an icon when she conducted chants in a traditional white robe from a car roof. The images that were created were shared hundreds of thousands of times on social networks; they show Salah surrounded by a crowd that answers her with revolutionary calls.
