Since Friday midnight Friday 31st, the United Kingdom is no longer officially part of the 27 members of the European Union.

At midnight on January 31, the United Kingdom officially severed ties with the European Union. After 47 years of communion and almost 3 years of debate, the divorce between Brussels and London is finally pronounced. Supporters of Brexit gathered in London to celebrate this disunity, and bid farewell to Europe.

The British had voted "yes" in 2016 in the referendum on the exit of the United Kingdom from Europe. Brexit takes effect a year behind schedule originally planned.

For its part, Scotland is more bitter about this exit. A vigil was organized in Edinburgh at the same time, bringing together supporters of the European Union, unhappy to see its links with the rest of Europe degraded. Some also claim the independence of Scotland to be able to re-join the European Union.

The challenge for the country today is to maintain peaceful economic ties with the 27 members of the European Union.
