France will send 600 more troops to West Africa due to increased terrorist activity in the region - Defense Minister Floris Farley said on Sunday. The reinforced forces will be sent mainly to the area between Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger, and another force will join the G5 Sahel forces. France already has about 4,500 troops in the Sahel region, south of the Sahara, and is worried that the United States is planning to withdraw from Africa, along with a deterioration in security.

Last week, United States Secretary of Defense Mark Asfer said Washington would not withdraw all of its forces from the continent as it surveyed its campaign around the world to allocate additional resources to tackle China's rise. Today, the United States has about 6,000 troops on the continent, and France relies on its intelligence and logistical assistance.
