Afghanistan to release 5,000 Taliban prisoners if violence decreases "significantly"

The Afghan government will gradually release 5,000 Taliban prisoners in return for a "significant" improvement in the security situation in Afghanistan, Sediq Sediqqui, spokesman for President Ashraf Ghani, said on Twitter on Wednesday.

"The pardon and the release of 1500 Taliban prisoners, (...) will begin (Saturday) and every day, a hundred prisoners will be released," wrote Sediq Sediqqui. Once discussions have started between Kabul and the insurgents on the future of the country, "500 Taliban prisoners will be released every two weeks (3,500 prisoners in total) provided that the violence decreases significantly," he continued.
