Nyon (dpa) - According to the Spanish daily "Marca", the European Football Union will suspend game play in the Champions League and the Europa League due to the spread of the novel corona virus.
The Spanish association boss Luis Rubiales confirmed that there are corresponding considerations. There was initially no official confirmation from UEFA.
The decision would be a novelty in the European premier class. In the past, eight group games had been postponed by a week since the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks in New York. Otherwise, there were mostly only shifts due to bad weather conditions.
UEFA also convenes a crisis meeting related to the corona virus, which will also cover the European Football Championship. Next Tuesday (March 17), representatives of all 55 member associations will take part in a video conference to discuss how to proceed after the outbreak of the pandemic, UEFA said. In addition to the pan-European EM, which is to take place in twelve countries from June 12th to July 12th, "all national and European competitions" are also discussed.
Following the meeting, UEFA plans to report on how to proceed.
