(CNN Spanish) - The President of Guatemala, Alejandro Giammattei, announced on Friday that the first case of coronavirus was confirmed in the country. The announcement was made by the president during an event in Guatemala City.

"From this moment the entry of the coronavirus into Guatemala is official," said Giammattei.

This is a Guatemalan man who traveled from Italy last Wednesday and arrived in the country on an Aeroméxico flight.

The man arrived in the country with three family members, the president explained. "The good thing is that he came in and we took him directly to the hospital and he is already under treatment."

Giammattei announced that Friday night will give a message to the nation detailing the next steps it will take.
