Croatia: earthquake hits Zagreb, significant material damage

A 5.3 magnitude earthquake struck the Croatian capital Zagreb on Sunday morning March 22, causing severe property damage and panic.

The earthquake was felt at 6 a.m. and many residents of the Croatian capital took to the streets, according to an AFP correspondent.

The epicenter of this tremor was located 7 km north of Zagreb, according to the Euro-Mediterranean Seismological Center (CSEM). ANTONIO BRONIC / REUTERS

In the old districts of central Zagreb, building facades collapsed and many parts of the city were left without electricity.

The tremor was followed by a second magnitude 5 earthquake at 7 a.m. Local authorities did not report any casualties at first.
