Avignon festival canceled after announcements by Emmanuel Macron

The President of the Republic explained that festivals were banned at least until mid-July. Olivier Py, who was to inaugurate the edition in 2020, preferred to throw in the towel.

The Avignon Festival, the most famous theatrical event in the world, scheduled for July 3 to 23, has been canceled due to the coronavirus health crisis, organizers said on Monday.

"The conditions are no longer met today for the 74th edition to take place," they wrote in a press release, after having "taken note of the declarations of the President of the Republic". Emmanuel Macron explained on Monday evening that the big festivals could not be held before, at least, mid-July.
