Laurent Fabius: "No eclipse of the fundamental principles of law"

BIG INTERVIEW - The President of the Constitutional Council stresses the importance of individual freedoms, even in times of crisis.

In an interview with Le Figaro , Laurent Fabius exceptionally takes the floor to return, in particular, to the adoption of laws specifically linked to the Covid-19 pandemic, and the concerns they raise.

LE FIGARO. - The Constitutional Council and the Council of State are accused of not sufficiently playing their role of bulwark before the attacks on liberties wanted by the executive. Is this an exaggeration?

Laurent FABIUS. - In this very special period, the role of the Constitutional Council remains unchanged. Today as yesterday, it is first of all up to us to independently control the compliance with the Constitution of all applicable laws, whether they are old laws or more recent laws. We are not in hypotheses like those of the implementation of article 16 of the Constitution or of an impediment of the President of the Republic, which would lead the Constitutional Council to exercise other missions than those which it usually exercises.
