Coronavirus: an unprecedented Ramadan

The confinement forced the Muslims to adapt the rituals of this fast, which begins this week.

New week for the Islam of France, which will live its Ramadan in confinement. Like many Muslim countries, such as Saudi Arabia, Algeria or Morocco, the public rituals of this month of fasting, prayer and alms will be profoundly changed. Next Thursday, at 6 p.m., a religious commission will meet at the Grand Mosque of Paris to decide on the date of Ramadan: it could begin this Friday, since the new moon - this is the benchmark - will appear on the night of Thursday at 3:26 a.m. French time, during the “night of doubt”.

In France, mosques have been closed since the start of the coronavirus epidemic. The Muslim community, estimated between 5 and 9 million faithful, is therefore prepared for the adaptations of the rituals.
