(CNN Spanish) - The president of Peru Martín Vizcarra, expressed this Sunday his will for the people, through a referendum, to decide whether to eliminate parliamentary immunity. The consultation will be formulated on the same day as the general elections in 2021, said the president.

Vizcarra added that the action is in response to the fact that Congress did not reach an agreement to eliminate parliamentary immunity, which he described as "turning his back on the people."

On the other hand, the President also regretted that Parliament missed the opportunity to issue other political reforms; In this sense, he anticipated that the Executive will send a bill to the Legislative.

The initiative seeks to prevent those people with first instance court sentences with crimes that carry penalties of more than four years in prison, from having the opportunity to run for any position of popular election.

The president pointed out that the new Congress is committed to honoring the promises of reforms for institutional strengthening and the fight against corruption.
