" The European Union must continue to mobilize alongside the hundreds of thousands of Belarusians who demonstrate peacefully for the respect of their rights, their freedom and their sovereignty ", declared the French president in a tweet.

This message was sent as tens of thousands of people gathered in Minsk on Sunday evening to demand the departure of President Lukashenko, who refuses to let go of power a week after his contested re-election.

In response to the worsening crisis, the EU on Friday agreed to sanctions against Belarusian officials linked to the crackdown or electoral fraud.
