Tropical Storm (Laura) turned into a powerful hurricane in the Gulf of Mexico today, with winds of 120 km per hour threatening the American coast.

(AFP) quoted the US National Hurricane Monitoring Center as saying, "Meteorologists expect the strength of the storm (Laura) to intensify as it approaches the southwestern coast of Louisiana and part of Texas on Wednesday."

The Miami-based National Hurricane Monitoring Center has warned of flash floods in parts of Texas, Louisiana and Arkansas.

For his part, Louisiana Governor John Bill Edwards wrote in a tweet on Twitter, directing to the state's residents, that the storm (Laura) is expected to touch land at least as a Category III hurricane, calling for caution, providing all necessary needs and following local news.

The storm led to torrential rains and floods in Haiti and the Dominican Republic, killing at least 24 people.

The Atlantic hurricane season, which officially lasts from June 1 to November 30, looks set to be intense this year and the National Center expects a low of 25.
